The last REAL VW camper died in 1979-ish... when production stopped in Germany and it all went front-engined.
The aircooled bus was built in South America until some years ago, but went water-cooled (!) some years back.
I once sold the beautiful 1971, one-owner Devon conversion of a friend's parents down on Upper Ground. It must have been about 1983 or 84. It had been the family car for as long as I could remember, but the kids had grown up. I sat in it one summer Saturday with the side door open and filter coffee in my flask.
By lunchtime I'd driven it and the cobber who bought it back to the family home for the transfer of cash.
I fell in love with it (and the whole VW philosophy) that morning and wanted to out-bid the guy with money I didn't have.
The coolest pedals ever, that you just pushed gently into the floor, and a aircool clatter that was very quiet and very far away from the driver's seat.
I still remember many of the 'buying tips' that I learned that morning from the Aussies who used to buy and sell there. The main one was "If you have to slam the sliding door, walk away". It should close with the pressure of one finger.
Gorgeous, gorgeous vans built for leisure and pleasure. The Friendee and the Bongo (favourites of divorced 'weekend dads' everywhere) are just a pale immitation. Bring back formica and lino.
