Not so much darker as warmer, a red with more orange in it perhaps - those are two very 'cold' colours for a living room @rich p.

It's what I've ended up with after doing the walls. That red was just an approximation.
I'm thinking of favouring the minimalist, bleak look for a change from warm and cosy! The grey is warmer than the previous white though! And the rug may have to go!

Well I like it @rich p. Plain cool walls will be great for all your pictures, and the colour and patterns in rugs and curtains are easy to change when you get fed up with them . (At least you didn't go for woodchip - I'm still struggling with the stripping .)

You want to start with the outer clothes first and not too rushed as it spoils it
