Does anyone know the legality of posting video clips of traffic offenders on YouTube? I.e. is it infringing someone's right to privacy by showing their face and/or vehicle registration?
In the UK there is no public privacy law, if you are in public you do not need permission to film or photograph anyone or anything.
Thanks Andrew - but why were Google getting into bother for showing people's faces on Streetview? They ended up having to blur them out...
If you're referring to them doing it in the UK, I think it's most likely because it's just easier for them to avoid any potential litigation by removing faces, numberplates etc
with streetview, i suspect it is FAR cheaper to auto obscure, than to obscure on request from valid reasons.. the ones quoted are stuff like walking out from an STD clinic...Provided you're a private individual, and you're not harassing the subject, no offences, although its an utterly pointless and sad thing to do.
Google are a business, and different rules apply. IIRC they've been voluntarily obscuring faces and vehicle registrations where individuals have asked them to do so. This info is already in the public domain, so what could they be sued for? It's just a big headache and easier to co-operate with the few that have a grievance.

I think it's the same as highlighting anything illegal. I wouldn't ignore an old lady getting mugged and I won't ignore a cabby running red lights or a van driver using his mobile.
The law's the law![]()
Gambatte - lol, as soon as I typed that, I sensed JD coming!
Wouldn't it be nice to cycle around in that get-up![]()
IANAL, but I think it can get messy if you start offering opinions on the driver, or alleging something that isn't in the video.
For example, identifying a driver and claiming they were using a mobile illegally but the camera didn't catch it, could be construed as libel. I think.
