I can see the relative merits in that one, I mean, if you crashed, they would protect your hands from scraping along the ground (even if it doesn't really work like that).

Surely where you put your bar ends is a matter of personal comfort and convenience. What works for you won't necessarily work for someone else.

I would have thought that going round even a gentle corner would create 'personal discomfort' for any gentleman riding that bike?

I have many bikes with bars which are curved round in that direction and they are very comfy.
