Was cycling up Gt Peter's Street in SW1 this morning, had a bin lorry blocking my side of the road so had to wait behind it for a bit due to the oncoming traffic on the opposite side. Then a cabby pulled to the side and stopped the traffic behind him to let me pass. I thought 'Awww, they're not all bad', then I saw that he wasn't being nice, he'd pulled over and blocked the traffic to pick up a fare of two people who ran across the road in front of me to get in (on the road side)...

Ah!

I am no lover of London cabbies, but I have no issue at all with them stopping to pick up fares. Some are slightly reticent about using their indicators and mirrors, but as long as nothing dangerous is done, it seems perfectly fair to me.

I realise you weren't complaining about him stopping the traffic per se, but some road users do complain.

The London taxi is an excellent cog in the urban-transport machine and in order to operate effectively, it sometimes has to stop where it might be impeding the traffic flow. I cannot believe that anyone's journey time is seriously affected by a cab picking up a fare. It's what they do.

One might just as logically rant at a cyclist for... Oops. Sorry. Wrong forum.

I partially agree with you there BB but I think if a cab is able stop in a place that doesn't hold everyone up then they should do so, it could mean their fare having to walk an extra 10 seconds to get in the cab I guess ^_^

In my experience, most cabs don't really think about where they stop or pull over or turn around etc...

london bridge is the worst for taxis pulling left without mirros , looking or signals. have had several close uns and only reasonbly fast reflexes have saved me getting wiped out.
