Some quotes from the article:

The recommended amount of exercise is one hour every day for children and 30 minutes at least five times a week for adults.

The most common reason people gave for not taking regular exercise was that they were too busy with work (35%).

Over half (53%) of people questioned said that they would take more regular exercise if they could fit it into their existing daily routine

So how come they didn't mention commuting to work by bike... that must be getting me my 30 mins daily easily:biggrin:.

"We need to make activity a normal part of our daily lives.
"And that means making it easier for everyone to be more active, by encouraging walking to work, active lunch breaks, free access to swimming pools and gyms.

Not a mention of encouraging cycling.

So your saying you can exercise and get to work at the same time, Interesting idea.

Yup - get a van with your rollers in the back, and get someone to drive you to and from work whilst you peddle.

I agree- this is particularly strange, as words along the lines of "cycling to work enables you to fit exercise into your daily routine" appear in pretty well every report on article on physical activity and public health that I've seen recently!

There is no way you could sell a concept like that. Joe Public knows that it's better to share a car or use public transport. Consider the wear and tear on roads with thousands of bicycles using it and the loss of revenue from the governments speeding stealth tax.

Imagine if they tried to to sell this idea to school children

So what's that then? I drive, but I've not paid any speeding 'tax'...

Is anyone really surprised at this? Most people drive to work, and drive home again. When they get home, exercise is the last thing on their mind because they're "too tired" - or rather lethargic.

Everything is done for people nowadays. The washing up, the cooking, the shopping. Travelling from A to B is as simple as sleepily getting in a car and pointing it in the right direction. Entertainment is flopping in front of the telly or PC and not speaking to anyone for three hours. Work is being sat in an office staring at a computer screen absent mindedly reading the same email fifty times to look busy, and hoping that the clock would be a little closer to 5:30.

Of course people are unhealthy and don't do enough exercise. Its because they don't do anything.

??????

I always thought a speeding fine was something people who speed have to pay, and a tax is something we all have to pay?

Yes, true, until you reach a situation where the vast precentage of the population has been caught speeding.

Just because people haven't been caught speeding doesn't mean they don't speed. Put more camera's up, lower the speed limit on rural roads, set up more average speed sections, change the speed limit up and down on the same road and watch the number of convictions rise further.

'Recently released figures reveal that in 2004 there were 13.5 million motoring offenses - that's about 1 for every 2 cars in the country. Of these there were 11 million fixed penalty notices which includes just over 2 million issued from speed cameras.
The increase in speed camera tickets is 6% higher than in 2003 and double that from 2001 raking in £130 million in fines during 2004.
These numbers are likely to increase as 233 new camera sites have been approved for 2006-2007'

'A total of 1,462,235 speeding fines were handed out to drivers in England and Wales in 2007 - the most recent data available.
At £60 each, that raised some £87,734,100 for Government coffers - the equivalent of £240,367 a day'

And what percentage of government revenues does that equate to? You may illustrate that by comparison with fuel duty if you wish, I'm sure you've got the figures to hand...

As per my response to shunter: your argument would carry rather more weight if it had some figures attached to it...
