Good article, and very true.

I love how a smattering of snow deadens all the noise too ... makes it really quiet ...

Only one bad fall so far, on black ice crossing an adverse cambered junction- nowhere to go, no way to avoid having to traverse the slope [which I didn't!!] ... I couldn't stand up after landing and had to slide to the gutter on my backside dragging the bike along!

Turning down lifts from colleagues.

Like this:

"it's horrible out there, can I give you a lift home?"

"NO WAY!... um, that's to say, no thanks."

... and that stupified look of horror on their face as they realise that, yes, you are going to cycle in ... THAT!!!!

So true. The feeling of insignificance when on an empty road in the middle of nowhere, or the dead of night is awesome and humbling. This beatiful weather makes it more so.

Joys of winter?... Pigsh!t. I don't get it... I really don't get it. :cold:

I'll brave the elements in all sorts of conditions, but I absolutely detest snow and ice. I'd rather have the oppressive heat of a scorching hot sunny day anytime... :sun:

My favourite ride this year was a hard 20 miler on the hottest day of the year back in June. I sweated buckets when I got home, but I enjoyed it so much, I had a quick shower then went back out and did another 15 miles. For quiet roads you can't beat a midnight ride in the summer (or during an England world-cup match... ) Happy days... :sun:

I did a fantastic MTB night ride on Tuesday night. The snow was the perfect thickness (deep enough to grip, not so deep that you have to push), the trails were nice and hard, the snow gives you great visibility, and I had a right good laugh with some mates.

All in all, much nicer than worrying about black ice on the roads.

Spunds great User482 - will try that on my old MTB if it hasn't seized up in the garage!

Do it! One of the guys was riding a 20-year old Saracen with mudguards and pannier rack - it didn't seem to slow him down much - he said the softness of the snow meant he didn't need suspension...
