The most dangerous spot for road injuries in London

I don't suppose many of you needed telling but....

Transport for London's accident statistics for 2008 to 2010 show that there was a total of 89 casualties at the Elephant & Castle northern roundabout during this three-year period. This represents an average of one casualty every 12 days.

The 89 casualties are made up of one fatality, seven people with serious injuries and 81 people with minor injuries.

The victims included 6 pedestrians, 36 pedal cyclists, 15 motorcyclists, 17 car or taxi occupants and 15 bus passengers. Two of the casualties were children.

I've never actually seen one there but have had to shout out to vehicles that just filter in without warning. Its certainly an area that requires a great deal of concentration and good positioning.

I hate hearing of these black spots on my route, the last time was in Kenningtona and I actually changed my route to cut it out of my ride.

I cant work out from your vid, where that starts and ends...is it heading West to East or South to North?

Thanks, its heading the wrong way for me. I'm googling now to see if Boris has one heading perpendicular to that, but as i dont generally have an issue on the RAB I'm pretty happy to keep using it. I think the trick is to take (and retain) the right lane, too many riders move left (near the kerb) and end up in the left turn lane, confusing the cars trying to join from the left and contributing towards collisions.

the other point is that its a 3 (or4) lane RAB so observation from traffic is obscured by adjacent vehicles on the approach (see all the white vans in my vid), many drivers do not show proper concern for others and just edge out blindly hoping that if they stick to the kerb no one will notice.

You can cut out the E+C from the NKR by turning off at Great Dover St, Trinity St, Great Suffolk St etc, but as you appear to be heading NW along St George's Road a quicker diversion would be along NKR, Meadow Road, Rockingham St, Southwark Bridge Rd etc

It basically goes from Kennington road, through LSU, up to Southwark bridge road, so west to east.

Cyclists were a rarity at the E&C until quite recently (back in 1972 there were three of us). They've increased markedly since 7/7 years and, note, the southern roundabout has been re-jigged, making it much safer. You'll not be surprised to hear that Johnson pulled the reorganisation of the northern roundabout.


The CS7 bypass is clearly safer than the northern roundabout, but I still prefer the roundabout for the rush. Come down Southwark Bridge Road, dodge left, cross Borough High Street turning right at pace and storm the northern entrance giving two fingers to the traffic coming from the right, slide in to the third lane on Newington Butts and you've got yourself a bike ride.
