I reckon this has been discussed so many times it should be a sticky.

Keep Calm and OMG.......CAKES!!
I always nod, smile and say hello to be polite because we are sharing the same enjoyment .....some respond with the same whilst others just keep going

I always nod, wave or say hi. If I get no response I turn round, chase them down, push them off, then give them a big hug and say "spread the love, brother".

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Oddly enough on the bit of cycle path i use hybrid riders stop to let me pass now i am on a roady all the time.

I wave/ nod to all cyclists assuming it is safe to do so , we are all cyclists and any snobbery shown just means people..

Some people nod, others don't. Depends on a lot of things.

Some folk are focussing on a busy road, may have had an argument with other half, may be thinking of that meeting they have first thing when they get into the office, may have a niggly bike mechanical.

I find I get more waves on Sundays from the leisure riders than I do in my weekday commutes.

As someone else pointed out, does every Mondeo driver wave at another?

i find the biggest 'do i or don't i' is while with, or encountering, a group of more than about 5.

when in the group, do the leaders' nods count for the whole group, or does each rider need to acknowledge the rider coming the other way? conversely, do you have to nod to all the group you encounter, if you've nodded to the leaders?

group on group always seems to elicit much noise and loud helloing…

Even worse is when you come across what is blatantly a single group that's split & is now regrouping.. 15-20 riders are spread over say 1/4 mile of road. Do you nod to all of them, to the clumps of riders or what?

You could done MASSIVE nod at a random fella in the middle. Really go for it, stand up, and then bow down to near crossbar height, whilst shouting "and that's for all of you". Someone try it, and report back here please

Not being funny, but why should people on scraggy mountain bikes or hybrids get a nod off me, when I spent far more money on my road machine, and spend countless more hours cleaning it. The fact that I only ride it at weekends and never in the rain doesn't matter.

People are just getting too big for their boots

No, but I think some of the nodding and camaraderie comes from being a slightly 'oppressed' minority
It's the same with motorcyclists - you nod at each other because there's not many of you out there and the cars are all out to get you.
Car drivers are neither oppressed, or a minority!
