The Northern Lights

Somebody just rang me to say the the Northern Lights made a spectacular appearance in Yorkshire skies last night, and might well be again tonight and tomorrow night so I'll be heading out later to see if I can spot them. I might even walk up the hill to the village of Heptonstall for a clearer view of the night sky. If I do, I'll take my camera.

If you are Oop North, it might be worth venturing out to see for yourself.

Lucky you and all those who have an opportunity to see such a spectacular natural beauty. Seeing the Northern Lights which I think are divine, is one of the things I want to see before I die!

If I ever had a bucket list (which fortunately I don't, I still think I am to young) seeing the Northern lights would be near the top of my list.

I left it a bit late, and didn't fancy going up the hill in the dark. I looked north from the town centre, but there is too much light pollution and the hills are in the way so I couldn't see much of interest.

If it is clear again tomorrow evening, I'll walk or ride up one of the local hills just before sunset and give myself a proper chance of seeing something.

Would be nice to see - I could go up Werneth Low, but it overlooks all the urban areas, and Manchester Cirty Centre is North (loads of light polution). Tues is supposed to be good, but it's hissing it down at the moment.

I'll be up in Shetland in July/August (can't wait), Northern Lights can be seen quite frequently there.

Saw it on the news last night so me'n'er got in the car and got up on rishworth moor about 11.15- nowt. Drove around the dark bits for an hour or so but nothing to be seen.

I looked out of my backdoor at about midnight. Unsurprisingly I didn't see any northern lights.

Next few days might be a possibility, there was a big solar flare sunday, so maybe tonight weather permitting we might just get a view?

Colin - thankyou for that. Do you think I should mention this to my sister-in-law, who has just spent a very expensive week in Finland north of the Arctic Circle hoping to see the Northern Lights, and didn't.......or should I just stay schtumm?

Again one of my big ambitions, but this has really reminded me of my age!

"Many years ago" I would have just upped and disappeared up North to see them on such a high likelihood, and it did cross my mind, but by the time I had factored in my responsibilities at home, work, the practicalities etc it just isn't possible.

I'm just old and boring!
