Depends on your definition of "in service" I guess. As she was returning to work at the same place she'd been at the day before, on a pre-agreed contract and rota, is that a break in service or unpaid leave?

Whereas I see an awfully nice fella, with two smashing little kids, who informed us all on Christmas Day that his wife had died, who has been bereft but dignified ever since, and who now has to face up to him and his kids losing their house because they were misled about exactly what it was his wife was paying into.

I appreciate your view and I'll stop posting as well but you have to recognise that we are told not to rely on the death in service benefit and that the financial decision to move over to being a locum rather than reducing hours to a part time contract has consequences.

It wasn't a "reliance", more of a "what if", an insurance policy if you will. Which appears to have been missold.
There's all kinds of reasons why, though I cherish the NHS and am eternally grateful for the work of the frontline staff, I'm glad that I don't work for it; and tales like this reinforce that opinion.
Anyway, I said I'll shut up, so I will, no offence intended to anyone.

Unless you are employed by an Agency who is your "employer" and covers your insurance then I am am afraid it is unfortunate, but with no employment contract at that point in time you are not covered
