Saw this on our local news last night whilst out for tea, so didn't hear the commentry or angle the local bbc were taking.
As said previously in thread, it's not the worst left hook ever, but surely we should expect better driving from the police ?
True - the Police should know better, it is at worst poor driving because it is inconsiderate. (I blogged this btw but will outline why below in a mo). My Devil's Advocate head on....
My understanding is that he went to his local paper - the Hull Daily Mail, owned by the same group who owns the Daily Fail and the Bristol Evening Post. This was then put in the hands of the National.
I think there are hazards presented - for one the passing vehicle obscures the cyclist from oncoming traffic and that which is waiting at any junctions. Another hazard is that it can distract the cyclist when they should be left to concentrate on the road ahead.
We also have to look at two points regarding the driving in that the vehicle is now performing to manouvres at once (and even late signals to my mind) ...how much time did it save..? Not a lot.
Yes it was slow, and yes he did have time to avoid any issues, but the Copper should have known better - its cheeky.
Oh and as for foreshortening on camera optics. My last three cams (two Camsports and the HQ2) seem to make things look further away rather than closer (side and center screen). I even did a video on the HQ2 to show this effect.
