I think a hipster could argue that his road career was the equal of G's. If he could just have converted one of his 2 runners up in P-N (or Romandie) into victory there would be more to debate.
A few publications alluding to the fact that in their opinion Yates (S) has stiffed Visma somewhat, in that he attended the Giro presentation, their December training camp, took part in the new kit press photoshoots etc, and had a full race calendar planned for next year.
Seems he made the final decision between Christmas and New Year, but as a result Visma are really going to struggle to recruit anyone of note as a quality climber, so they may be marginally nobbled for the year, or at least some key races.
I think that backs up the theory about why he retired.
Hopefully he will bring out a book at some point to explain all - in fact, perhaps that is why he has done what he has done

Rumour has it that he's opened a Black pudding shop in Bury market...sure the lad has had enough of the grueling regime of a pro cyclist,and after a taste of being/winning GC I'm not sure he fancied domestique duties again ?

Definitely good on him, for me the best bit is that it is was down to him when he left, and not a loss of form and ending up in substandard teams - more power to him.
I'll definitely miss watching him ride though, one of the icons of the sport (From a UK perspective) for me - would have been nice to see him go for one more year, and have a swan song year at that.
I just think there is more to it, and I'm hopeful at some point in the future we'll find out, purely because I am a nosey bugger.
Still hoping to see him return to the sport in some other capacity at some point too.

Malky Bollema to call time on his career at the end of the season. Seems to have been on the scene forever.

Yeah, he's a bit of a weird one really - often talked up a lot, both in GC and one-dayers - but never really excelled. There's an interesting comparison with his compatriot of a close age, Wout Poels. Both have a single hilly monument as their biggest result and have GT stage wins. Poels actually has more wins but Mollema made a GT podium (3rd in Vuelta) and several GT top tens. Poels has better GC wins I think, though both fairly minor (neither has a WT GC). Mollema scores about double Poels UCI points.
Poels was very much considered a domestique deluxe, and rode that way, while Mollema often had a freeish role to pursue minor GC placings
