Good morning. HOT! Not much happening here but there has been some big "excitment" in the village in the last few days. Two fully mature beech trees have shed huge boughs across the village road. The first about 9.00pm on Sunday evening simply fell across the road. A team of villagers and the local farmer was quickly mustered and the rioad cleared. LCC Highways followed up the next day. Around midnight Tuesday a beech about 30 yards from my house dropped a bough across the road on to my neighbours car. My car was parked immediately below hers. Her mini narrowly avoided being crushed as the fall was partially caught by a hedge and fence. Another team was mustered in the middle of the night. Community spirit and enterprise in action.
There's now much debate about the safety of a lot of the village trees, discussion on responsibility and who owns what. It's a big can of worms. Tuesday's tree is on private land, six feet from the road. The bungalow is occupied by an eighty year old widow. She rents. Lord, knows who the landlord is.
Today Mrs P and I are having lunch at
The White Swan it's my birthday treat from Monday
There was a massive fuss around here a few years ago when the counsel cut down a load of trees along the road near us
and in the park
They were nice trees and not that old
the local facebook and NextDoor groups were all saying how terrible they were and how they should all be etc etc etc
I was wondering why so I took the extreme measure of asking out local councillor
she replied saying that a large branch had fallen from one tree a few months ago
and as a result they checked and found that the wrong type of tree had been planted many years ago my mistake
This particular species - a type of beech - is well known for getting to a certain age and just randomly dropping branches
so it should not be planted lining roads and paths for obvious reasons
Apparently no-one else on the groups had bothered to check it out!!!
Turns out that there were published plans to chop the relevant trees down and plant triple that number - some as direct replacement and other nearby as per policy
which has been done but had to wait a few years to allow the ground to stabilise
It was weird when I put this reply on the Facebook and NextDoor groups
I got some abuse for believing "them" (as expected) but a lot of people shut up about it
but I find it weird that so many people were prepared to shout about it
but not actually ask people who might know why
Oh and the local paper just ignored it all - despite me sending them an email!!
