Good morning from Pitlochry. A beautiful sunny day is upon us. What a busy place Pitlochry is, rammed with Americans, sorry @12boy but to my surprise it is. How are you 12boy? We're ten minutes walk from town in a very peaceful location.

This weekend is the Atholl Highland Gathering and Games which explains the gathering throngs. We've decided to visit and watch big burly men tossing their cabers. One event listed in the competitions is the "Farmers Walk." I will report back as I can't even imagine competitive farm walking!!! 🤣

Next task is my Highland breakfast, the scents drifting from the kitchen have me salivating already.

That explains the Americans. For some reason they seem to love our Highland Games.

Yep, cool start but sunny here too......not surprising given it's only about twenty odd miles away as the crow flies.

Out early and plodded my way round a slow 10k run. The old back is niggling a bit again which spoiled the enjoyment slightly.

Off for a nice steep in the bath now then breakfast.

Point out to the parents that the water pistols are covered by the Violent Crimes Reduction Act 2006*. As such you've had to confiscate them and are awaiting the next weapons amnesty to allow you to dump them in the bin at the nearest police station.

*Yes it's genuine, we were required to have the warning in place on water pistols, cap guns(caps are covered separately, by the Firearms And Explosives Act), spud guns and Nerf pistols/rifle's.
I was waiting outside Mini D's school thenother day and some older lads, 15,or 16, came out and were waiving around water pistols in the shape of a Glock 17. They were blue rather than black, but dark enough that someone who doesn't know much about firearms might glimpse them and think they were real.

I did consider having a quiet word and suggesting they kept them out of sight in public, but didn't think they'd listen. I decided to stand back and wait for the police to point MP5s and them and frit them up a bit.

Looks like we are getting a new cycling path from Mach to the North . Might bring in some business for the area.

Double‐edged sword?

We get the occasional major new facility up here and the locals go gaga about new business and increased prosperity which usually means an influx of more tourists and out-of-area leisure seekers.

And then some time later the same locals start moaning about more traffic, less parking spaces and 'offcomers' taking up 'their' space in the local pub, restaurant etc.

Today, I am proud to report that we are undertaking that much maligned and often misunderstood pastime of...

... doing Sweet FA.

In all seriousness we love it - 2 hard-working lives spent hard at work in demanding careers and our retirement is primarily R&R - spent chilling and relaxing together.

Obviously there needs to be an element of keeping fit, and there is always some mundanity to deal with in life, but in general we like nothing more than a good old companiable doss.

It's not for everyone, we are close to two couples who just can't sit still. Every day is a walking day or a golf day or a to-do list day ad-infinitum. Both think we waste too many days. As background, both couples are in marriages where the fires of passion dimmed long ago and they find it difficult to just be together for any length of time. One couple is also suffering from 'empty nest' syndrome.

As ever, each to their own, but we are happy that every day does not have to be filled with outdoor activities, meeting up with people or wading throuh a list of tasks.

So, fellow retirees, what do you think of having a lovely doss as a way of spending retirement?

I’m thinking of having a siesta this afternoon. I’ve done plenty exercise for the day and the local haunts are now really busy with visitors which I don’t enjoy so I will hide indoors now.

I can amuse myself doing very little

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

Very true. I'd like more and better shops to open because what we have now in Mach is total rubbish. Expensive Co op and spar, lots of cafes, and junk shops. That's it
