I know and if there's one thing that turns me off tipping it's being handed a card reader offering the option to tip 10%, 15%, 20% etc.

If I get good service I'm delighted to tip being forced to tip or being made to look a tight arse by not tipping really p***** me off.

I would agree with your point, plus, if I tip, I want it to go to the person who gave the good service, rather that into some “tip pool” and be shared among those who may not have given good service.

Many of the places we’ve been, post Covid, have reverted to the old “we’ve added x% to your bill as a discretionary service charge. Tell us if you’d like it removed”

Exactly. If I'm tipping I always find the person(s) who served us, give the tip and explain what he/she did so well for us. I feel it's the least one can do.
