The Retirement Thread

As far as retirement goes mine was rather weird

I knew I was getting close
and a new Head started at the school where I worked
Her view of my job (employed as a teacher but spent half my time fixing computers and anything associated with them) was that I was useless and a waste
She said as much
AND ignored me whenever possible
even changed some policies and told everyone else about it on my afternoon off - then told me off for not knowing the changes!!

Then I gt a letter from the pension people from my previous career suggesting a quote and some free advise - which I obviously went for
and thought "better check my Teacher pension while I am at it.
when I rang the person I spoke to went though it all
then stopped and said she needed to put me on hold to check something - which was worrying

but she came back and said that the figure she gave me were for me retiring NOW - or withina few months
I was JUST inside a "wind down" time - so if I retired in the next few months my pension would be based on my highest salary from my previous job as a full time teacher on a higher pay scale

If i stayed on at the school I would get a lot less when I retired

so - resigning was an easy decision

but I intended to get another job - probably in a school but not as a teacher

Then my "now wife"'s Mum got ill and everyone needed me to drive them to hospital and all that
then she died and everyone needed running around to sort things out and take stuf to teh ip and whatever

then my wife needed me around for a while

THEN Covid happened

and by the time THAT was all over I was kinda used to not working

so planning was there - but was naff all use as circumstances happened

After a while I started volunteering at things - mostly helping with IT

which is a damn site more difficult to find that I expected but I seem sorted now

but it can be weird - and plans do not always turn out to be reality!

A balaclava'd yoof was spotted trying to break into my granddaughter's car at about 08:00 this morning.
Aforementioned yoof was also noticed lurking around the two nearby shops.
Fortunately, the neighbour opposite was checking to see if the school bus was there, saw what was happening and despatched hubby to see him off!
Later, a broken car window or two were reported on the local Fb page where he had tried to break into other vehicles.. 😡

Retirement,retirement,what a day here.first job change our beds.followed later by dusting the staircase,then making spag boll for two,he does not like that.Wash up extra because he had a different dinner.Followed by gardening duties,and sorting out the washing,now because Mrs P is out i have made him his afternoon drink with biccies.Just sat down for a break.

Latest project - getting a mates barn find Raleigh Wisp to run again, after being off the road since 1970.
Might be a lost cause, but I'll give it my best.

Got a ride in, 47 miles and a somewhat uncertain elevation gain as first 10 miles the Wahoo did it's usual post flight thing of not showing grade or elevation so had to restart it. Anyway, was around 2200ft with an essentially flat route with one climb in the middle up to the monastery.

As for retirement, well obviously it's better to have money. If anyone has to depend solely on state pension then it's going to be a pretty restricted retirement of what you can do and where.
Personally I retired for two reasons, I was financially secure and I'd had enough of work.
I'm now in fortunate position of being fit and healthy enough and have means to go away on holiday multiple times a year. Get away for a holiday with better weather and cycle on some great routes to boot.

As for boredom, it's a rare day I find myself bored but it happens. However, better to be bored at home than in work I say.
Nobody to my knowledge has ever been on their death bed and wished they'd spent longer in work

get tea (dinner for the posh ones)

now a busy day has an Ageuk Client at about 11
ad pick the kids up from school at 3
then come home and have tea


on top of which the Government have "finally" chipped in with £900 a month to help out
when we were OK before but now.....

If I was on an early duty, I would get up around 3am, be at work by 4, home by early afternoon, walk the dog, do decorating or building, collect kids from school, cook tea for said kids and MrsP, play with children and repeat.
On late shifts just shuffle the time around and get on with life.
Too many light weights around expecting other people or organisations to baill them out.

Bright and sunny here so ride it is. Not sure how the legs are so I'm going to head out and see. I've got a big route planned with a ton of climbing so I'll assess on first climb or two whether I bail early or commit to the big one
