My response is usually to the effect of "didnt see you on the field."

Not exclusive to football, fans of lots of sport say that due to affinity with team.
Personally I think it's an acceptable saying.

I don't think it's at all acceptable. Its an erosion of standards, and without standards we'd be no better than animals or thr French.
