Just come back from a ride

normal loop but clockwise - which is backwards to me

I went that way so I could stop at the cafe boat on on the last third of the ride but I couldn;t find it!

that has happened before when I am not certain which bridge they are at and in places you can ride past on the other side of the canal and they are hidden


so I was starving when I got home!!

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but Dutton canal tunnel at Preston Brook** is one of the oldest working tunnels in the world.
** for others, Preston Brook is near where Ebiker lives.

Day to myself, fitted some fog lights and a louder horn to my motorcycle.

Then went and got a haircut and some lunch, popped out for a 90 miles motorcycle ride out to Cirencester, off to the pub in about half an hour, Mrs Gunk and my youngest should be back from the golf around 7.30pm so we’ll have supper together. Long time since I’ve had a full day to myself, it was rather nice!

They will have had a good day watching the golf.
There is a good chance a Spaniard (Elvira) will win his 1st ever major and take home £1M which is very nice.
A guy got a hole in one at the designated hole and won a BMW worth £70K+.

he blew it on the last hole... he lost his bottle and played like I used to. Threw away 2 shots and came 2nd. He will be sick.

If the weather has been dry for a while then I have a lovely ride that goes to that tunnel and then over the top on the old horse path
There is another tunnel further on and if I keep going that way I get to the Canal lift that raises and lowers boats from the Trent&Mersey canal to the River Weaver
(they have a cafe as well)
but that is "being repaired" at the moment and has been for a while!

Apparently they are currently inspecting the Preston Brook tunnel to check it is all OK

the canal when I join it is the Bridgewater canal - the second oldest in the country
it is owned by Peel Holding and not the Canal and River Trust

it changes to the Trent&Mersey Canal at the start of the Preston Brook tunnel
but the "stop lock" (a lock with gates and all that but only a VERY small change in water level - but loss of water from one does not affect the other) is a short distance AFTER the tunnel


BTW - teh Bridgewater canal is built differently in a very important way
The slope of the canal bank in places where it is higher than the surrounding land - is much steeper than for later canals - I think it is 25 degrees and newer ones (i.e. most of them) are 33 degrees
which makes the banks less able to resist breaches than other canals
