If you like the tones and sounds of the Shipping Forecast you might enjoy reading this little book:

I read it a year or so ago. The author visits all the areas mentioned in the forecast and writes a bit of history and about his trips. Worth a read.

When they do the reports from coastal stations I like to play 'guess the pressure'. (i.e. if they say it's 997 at Channel Lightvessel Automatic, I'll have a stab at say, 993 for the next one along, possibly Scilly - if I'm correct, I get a point. My record is 3 points). How sad is that?

I think we need the full details of the scoring system in order to determine exactly how sad.

I'll hold my hands up here Adrian, it is pretty desperately sad. Here's the list of coastal stations on the 00:48 forecast. They read them out clockwise, starting at Tiree. It's a point for each pressure guessed correctly. I've often thought about making the scoring system more exciting, but, as you can see, the game's exciting enough as it is. It's easier when there's a big high pressure over the country as pressure will vary little from one place to another. It gets trickier when it's like now and quite cyclonic (but it adds to the sheer thrill of the game of course).

I love to catch a full shipping forecast with the inshore areas & weather stations. Sand Ettie Light Vessel Automatic is a favourite.

My favourite reader is the American man with the voice that could move tectonic plates and The Attention All Shipping book is a really good read.

Do you mean Neil Nunes, he's Jamaican. There is something wonderful about such a rich exotic voice reading such a very British institution.

I've noticed that when the early morning forecast is read now (or at least last time I caught it), it's by someone from the Met Office, not the Radio 4 announcer, and there's something lacking in the timbre. Not sure if it's something in the broadcast link, or because to be a radio 4 announcer, you must have a certain something in the voice.

You win. The prize is a kestrel. If I can catch one.

Already got one (ish)

It is a contentious issue.... there is a bird of prey that takes the sparrows and small birds that bathe in the pond.

My wife sees it as a nasty predator, I see it as a fact of life, and a beautiful one at that!
