I hit a pothole on Tuesday at speed and with my weight coupled with a pressure of 120 lubs per squinch l had an explosion! No problem, you know the drill, change the tube and away. The wheel was jammed in tight and after a struggle, I got it off. Have I damaged the frame? Rear wheel was always a bit tight so it wasoff to thr LBSNo problem with the frame, drop-out true and 130mm but the hub, youve guessed it, was 135mm! no wonder it was a tight fit.
OK, we will change the hub, he had a few in stock but only 24 spokes and not 36. After a few phone calls - no 130mm hub with 36 in thailand so I'm thinking this is going to be expensive as I would need a pair of wheels - 36 spokes on the fromt and 24 rear would look odd.

Noi, the LBS owner had a thought - cut 5mm oot of the middle of the 'thingy'' (tech term) and bring it down to 130mm

The thingy is the silver thing circled in the photo. A friend of his Chuan, runs an enginerring shop and also is a frame builder. Noi and I cycled a few kilomstres to the workshop, Chuan looked at the job and told me to pick the bike up on Friday. Total cost -less than £6 and a perfect fit!
Now whats that silver thingy called?

A silver lining?

Depending on the hub's design hopefully it is nothing more than a spacer to counterbalance the freehub on the other side, which leads to the point that you would be adviced to buy Noi a Tiger beer for redishing the wheel or else you will find it off-centred having removed 5mm from the left!

At that sort of rate you should run a custom part import-export business...

Getting re-dished tomorrow, that's another £1 I will have to spend!

See if your hub is one of these. From the exploded diagrams it looks like it's called a left side cap. Though I'd prefer it if it was known as a 'differential thrust flange' or something, as that sounds far more clever and technical.
