It's a little known fact that garage floors are a portal to a parallel universe and anything dropped on said floor is immediately transported to another dimension in time and space, never to be seen again. I swear I've dropped stuff, seen where it's fallen and by the time I've bent down to pick it up it's disappeared.

The only option on your list should be:

Clean your garage. Don't start a job before cleaning up. Always. Clean garage, happy life.

I'm really struggling with that concept.

Well giving up worked this time. Having accepted the derailleur was scrap without the springy retaining clip I had a cup of tea indoors, then went into the garage again to clear up the mess.

There on the floor, where I had looked an hour earlier was the little thing. Yay!

That reminds me of a bit of wheel/cassette fettling I did once. I'd put everything back together and the gear indexing, which should have been fine, was all off. I faffed around with the indexing and just as I was making progress I looked down on the floor and spotted the spacer that should have been behind the cassette. So ... take it all to bits and start again.

For the n'th time I went for your option 9. Vow never to attempt repairs again.

You failed to follow the rule of “99% of problems are usually caused by what has recently been changed”. Shifting problems? Recheck what you have recently changed / fettled. In this case, start with cassette, and / or wheel.
