On foot or on the bike, my purpose I always to get someplace or to explore an area.
Alas, I often get lost

Some rides may start purposeless, but then the legs get other ideas, forgetting that it's the brain that's really in charge .

I rarely set off on foot or bike just for the sake of doing it, but I enjoy a walk or ride normally and my mind flows through lots of subjects, and solve lots of problems - only to forget it all when I arrive at my destination.

Tonight I went to pilates (being lazy and late I had a lift up the hill), then on my way home, I suddenly remembered there was a path I hadn't explored so diverted to explore that. I discovered it was slippery after the rain, but nice walking through the field of rape. A pleasant 2 miles!

If the weather is nice enough i'll go purely for a purposeless journey. Otherwise walking the dogs or extending my commute until my head is straight works.

If the weather is bad I do purposeless sitting on the toilet for ages at a time for a bit of me space and time.

I try and get to Paris 2/3 times a year just for the walking - started off on a Hemingway trail and now just walk for the enjoyment. Metro stations are plentiful so getting back to base after a whole day of walking isn't too much of a problem!

Walking, more so than cycling, can be a solution to many of life's ills and issues. I've just finished reading Werner Herzog's tale of his walk from Munich to Paris after his friend fell ill. I'd also like to complete the Camino De Santiago in my 60th year - not for any religious reason but purely walking it for walking's sake.
