Aye ... but not applicable to @rich p

If @rich p is going to apply his grammatical fascism consistently, he is going to be very, very, busy on here.

The group started out as Ama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, but this was changed after announcing support of Osama Bin Lade to the more catchy and shorter AQI (al-Qaeda in Iraq)

The group became ISI (Islamic State in Iraq) in 2006 and then added "al Sham" to become the ISIS in 2013 (Note this is important later.)

ISIS (The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) dropped the last two letters to become IS (Islamic State) in the June 2014 branding of the organisation. There is some dispute as to whether this is an fact "Syria" as we know it or the wider ancient Syrian empire

The US branding prefers to be ISIL (Islamic state of Iraq and Levant) as the the US believes the historic phrase "Levant" more closely matches the new declared "State" now includes Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Jordan, and a closer translation of "al Sham (as introduced in 2013, and also present in the Arabic translations)

In the meanwhile the French refer to them as "EIIL" ( L'Etat islamique en Irak et en Syrie)) or rather did until they decided that in line with many Arabic news broadcasters they would now refer to the organisation as DAIISH or Da'esh (abbreviation of Dawlat al-Islamiyah f'al-Iraq wa al-Sham)

It does annoy me. I appreciate they want to be seen to denounce them but it comes across as petty and unproffesional in my opinion. I wish the news could nust be factual without all the sugarcoating and spin... World peace would be good while I'm at it.

I wish the news could just be factual
This entire debate, such as it is, surely lays to rest the idea that it can ever be any such thing. Even the decision as to what is 'news' is inherently political.

And for once you have your wish. Enjoy.

BBC. Wot it says on the tin. British - yes. Broadcasts - yes. A Corporation - yes.

IS. I don't give a tuppeny whatever about what IS say of themselves, but "Islamic" they are not, and a recognised "State" they are not. "So-called" kinda captures that essence in an accurate nutshell.

'Daesh' would be preferable as it doesn't give IS any legitimacy and is as I understand it, an insult to them.

much better would be the suggestion Tweeted into the Last Leg by a lady viewer - CISTISIS.

I'll leave it to the reader to work out the meaning

Use Daesh. End debate.

We can call the enemy whatever we want, the less appealing and more dehumanising the better - it makes it easier for the troops to kill them.

Charlie, Jerry, Fritz etc.

Apparently the French called the Jerries "Boche".
