The spread of the 'reverse only into parking space' rule

What is good from the US on parking is the introduction and enforced use of spaces appropriate to the vehicle size

We have one unpleasant woman at a local health centre who used disabled spaces.

When asked to move, we were told

"Don't you realise how difficult it is to drive and park a vehicle this size in an ordinary space?

I need to use disabled spaces"

I bit my tongue........

I'd have blocked her in, and then when asked to move it if trot out the same excuse by way of a reply.

Absolutely no good for us....

With a wheelchair and hoist we need to go in forwards or have a space with access at both front and rear

Otherwise there is no room to unload and then if you do manage you are boxed in by the adjoining vehicles

It's frustrating reversing into a disabled bay only to find a bollard smack bang in the middle at the end of the bay, meaning I can't get the ramps down for the chair. So I have to unload into the road and disrupt traffic.

Depends. Local supermarket has spaces backing onto the stores covered entrance walkway - I'll back into those as access with the trolley for shopping is then easy. Rest of the car park is front in first as otherwise you can't get the trolley to the back of the car to unload. And if you leave the trolley alone when reversed parked and hump bags to the back of the car it the trolley tends to start wandering down the sloping tarmac by itself. It's easier parking further away.

Office I worked in had a reverse parking policy. I got complaints I was parking the pool car 1/2 hanging out of the bay - 'So get the bushes cut so i can park it further back and still get in the hatchback without damaging my suit, getting wet and scratching the car'. Message got through eventually.

Theres a noticeable difference in parking bay widths with the multi-storeys in town, newer one has much wider bays than the one harking back to the 70's
