Even if you didn't notice that I linked to that article at 10:48 this morning, you might have wondered why I went through the list of the worst 10 cars in saying, yet again, that two of the cars on the list of worst offenders are only 3* Euro NCAP.

The point I am making is that the compromise in vision of others on the road against safety of the occupants is not a very acceptable trade off IMO.

All Euro- N Cap rated cars have beefed up pillars to even get in the running

I have a road traffic cop friend who is a firm believer that driver air bags should be replaced by a big metal spike sticking out the middle of the steering wheel. Says he’s sure it would dramatically decrease the number of road accidents. I have to agree.

Given that most road deaths happen to the occupants of cars already, I'm not sure I would go along with that.

You can thank the obsession with the 'rigid passenger safety cell' and chasing ratings in the Euro-N-Cap scheme for beefing up of the A pillars in cars.

Thise who boast about the star rating of their cars might want to consider that they present a significant danger to others due to the restricted vision which their cars offer them.

It would have a dramatic and immediate effect in bringing down the number of road accidents, it would make drivers pay serious attention to their driving. It is just a shame that no politician is going to be brave enough to stand up to the motoring morons loby and bring in such a legal requirement

I have a mate who bent a car's A pillar...... shame it was his leg that did it - it got smashed to bits..... (car overtaking another - drove straight through my mate coming the other way on a bike)..... somewhat lucky he was a well built track cyclist !

Now that Euro NCap are taking more interest in the safety of pedestrians (and presumably cyclists), it would be useful if they marked down cars for having large A pillars, or anything else that reduces visibility. I wonder if they already do, or if they would be able to be convinced to add it to future versions of NCap.

Has the safety assessment for pedestrians changed?


Euro NCAP released a separate star rating for pedestrian valid from 1997 to 2009. The pedestrian protection rating was based on the adult and child head form tests and the two legform tests. As of 2009, the pedestrian score has become integral part of the overall rating scheme, however the technical assessment has remained the same.

Fossy, as regards NCAP not considering cyclists, the Dutch have been campaigning to change this.

I consider an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

All accidents are going to hurt irrespective of what they are made of. Better the drivers see you before they pull out on you isn't it !
