Thinking back to last winters carnage / Insanity / insert appropriate here...iirc we had a whole day with snow on the floor here in Peterborough. Not sure how we survived...
I always noticed, moving from Notts in the late 70s, there was lots of snow there. We rarely get snow here.

Looking out of the attic windows, l can see snow on HolmeMoss (about 25 miles away)
Plus, as l was out to walk the dog , it’s sleeting here

Shopping this morning and brrr, for the first time here, it feels really cold. 6c, felt like 3 or 4 at the most. By the time I'd finished, shopping, 9c...but didn't feel one degree warmer.
Always shop in Asda and there's a bunch of homeless sleep by the river and in alcoves by the back, they were all fairly grumbling and looking cold this morning. Heck of a life in the winter to be out there all night, must be awful

the piccadilly line has had chunks closed due to leaves on the line for quite a while
don't recall it being an issue when i were lad, apparently the introduction of disc brakes for trains is a problem, old brakes pressed on the wheel surface, scraping it clean, with discs the leaves/whatever can build up

Looks outside, sunny with a bit of cloud. Lovely. (if cold). There is a light breeze which should (is) drying surfaces nicely, so tomorrow is likely be dry, if below freezing.

That may be a factor.
If I consult my memory bank of half remembered unreliable nonsense it tells me that another factor is lighter weight (and hence more efficient) rolling stock not having the same leaf squishing effect as older heavier stock.

Apparently the old steam trains had very few problems because they were much much heavier
