Possibly one of the widest on road cycle lanes as well!

That's what I thought Gaz. It's short (although lots of people have provided evidence of shotrer ones) but it is bloody wide!
Almost takes the whole width of the carriageway.

Obviously I'll rise above quips about girth being more important than length, but one wonders if the council misread the measurements :reading:

There is one in Banbury where you come off a half decent off road cycle path - the cycle path then directs you to cross to the wrong side of the road to about 8' of shared use path and then abandons you - always meant to take a photograph but forget as I totally ignore it -

I worked for 14years as part of a County Council Road Design Team and cannot reconcile in my mind the design of some cycle facilities with the sort of people in them that I know are competant - it is like there is some sort of seperate ghost team working on them

Isn't it just that its designed by people who won't actually be using them... we have a new computer system at work designed to "help us", its a complete nightmare with lots of duplicate entry etc. We've been told others are happily using this system - well I don't know how. But having been a programmer years ago I can understand how the system gets written without fully understanding how its used.

For that reason the road design team should contain/consult with all road users - I suppose the one I'm complaining about is consulting the public... I just suspect they won't listen to them.

Councils are desperate to meet TARGETS for cycle lanes, which means painting them anywhere they think they can get away with it and adding it all up.

With regard to cycle lanes and other traffic schemes in general I've long believed that somebody at the Department for Transport has a seat on the Board of one of the road paint manufacturers; how else do you explain the profligate waste of paint everywhere?

I can't speak for every company who does these projects, but certainly a good firm would design something that would benefit the staff through a bit of systems analysis before, during and after the project. Yes, might need to adjust how you work slightly, but there should be a reason.

Having duplicate entries and things sounds like the company went to a dojy consultancy firm to save a few pennies

Many years ago, Gosport held this title with a "link" route between an of road cycle path and a road. It was 17 inches between the start and end signs, in fact the dashed lines, and End wording only just fitted.

It was removed after being highlighted in the old "Cycling Today"
