Looks like a really well-thought-out build and currently for sale for about £35k IIRC.

I'd absolutely love a sleeper of an old 240/242/244 estate - a big power four pot turbo from a later car would be the obvious choice but you can't argue with the noise or numbers from that V8..

I need to temporality retire from this thread, my 2012 V60 D5 has been condemned for scrap. Broken lifters (some bits of which might be in the engine somewhere) and suspected bent valves. had her for 7 &3/4 years, taken her from 50k to 140k miles.

After a suitable period of morning I'm on the lookout for a sub 60k mileage new shape V60 with a petrol based engine and a nice spec. Quite like the look of the B4 unit. The T6 plug in is half tempting if I could find a decent price 18.8kw version, although slightly nervous on buying a 2nd hand with a big lump of battery in it?

Any sagely wisdom on the merits of the mild hybrids vs the PHEV versions gratefully received.

I also found myself looking at late model (2011/2012) low mileage V70 T5s too, although not sure that's a sensible choice tbh, despite the V70 being a thing of squared off beauty!

If youre aftually going to a) plug it in, and b) do a sufficient shorter journeys to justify it, then the the plug in hybrid is good.

On our old T8 Mrs D would toddle round the commute and shopping on the battery, and at the weekend the ICE engine would take her to visit her folks.

My daily commute is a 15 mile round trip so would easily do that on the battery, plus the weekend hockey matches are mainly sub 30 mile round trips. How do you check battery health though? - some plug ins have been barely use on battery as they were attractive company car tax but then driven on ICE all the time.

You cant really check battery health. The battery needs to undergo a controlled cycle of charging and discharging over several days snd requires a special bit kit thwt costs a fortune. The plug in devices etc are so inaccurate as to be useless.

I really wouldnt sweat it - the batteries are far more reliable than the ICE engine, and you get a 8 year warranty on them from new anyway.

Volvo, like everyone else, keeps 15 odd percent reserve capacity, or "headroom", that is never used and as the battery slowly degrades to loss of capacity is taken up by the headroom so the user never sees any loss of range.

When we traded ours the sales chap was surprised it had been used as intended. He reckoned most came back with the charge lead still in its wrapper, possibly from fleets where company car users got a fuel allowance but not nothing for burning their own domestic electrons.

Never really keen on the v59 basically a ford focus and ride was awful tbh not like a v70 at all.

My Octavia rides better than. My mate has one.

Although Volvo saw fit to bestow the V50 with a nice selection of petrol and diesel 5 pots for those that shuddered at the thought of 4 cylinder Ford/PSA power.
