The wrong clothes

I am a firm believer that it is never too cold, but you have the wrong clothes. Sadly today, I had the wrong clothes.

I was planning a ride this morning at first light, but ended up giving up and going home after 3 miles due to the fact that my face and ears were freezing, not far from literally.

It was c. -1 this morning, but clearly I had the wring kit on as I was too cold

I thought it better to stop than do something that I wouldn't enjoy as I don't want to associate cycling with a lack of enjoyment.

Stupidly, I had a wind proof balaclava in the garage, but it had completely slipped my mind that I owned it, hence not wearing it today.

Next cold morning there will be no stopping me!

you can always takes layers off but if you have not got layers you cant put them on

Indeed, I think there's only been a couple of times that I've worn all of my "just in case" spares, the only thing I've ever missed was a cap a few weeks ago when we got freezing rain - luckily I only had a couple of miles to do but my head was very uncomfortable when I got home.

Strangely, though, I've only just thought about it and I still don't carry headwear or a spare Buff. I've got waterproof jacket, sleeves, gilet and sometimes even lightweight fleece, but nothing for the head. I might just go and grab one for the bag.

yep today was freezing in the wind...I had a base layer, 2 merino jerseys, arm warmers and a cyclechat shirt on..as wellas a balaclava and night vision gloses with innner gloves asw ell and goretex wind stopper longs and neoprene over shoes ..oh and 2 pairs socks and I was still shivering.

Wow. That just shows how different we can be.

I was out with a t-shirt, windproof and unlined hi-viz waterproof on top and my Craghopper Kiwi (not the winter ones) on my legs, fingerless mitts and trainer socks under my shoes. I only did about 10-12 miles (I forgot to put the computer back on when I left town) but I was toasty like that.

base layer, long sleeve jersey, roubaix jersey, added gilet for the return, temp was 1 deg c. :eg warmers and roubaix bib knicks. Perfect for me, used my jacket last week and simply couldn't cope with the lack of breathability. Fine for a short ride, but longer than 20 it doeasn't breathe enough for me.
Decent gloves and a buff completed the ensemble.

a seal skin beenie hat with a buff and seal skin gloves + inner gloves and heat holder socks = nice warm ride lol well once you warm up from riding haha i cant be arsed to ride out there its too cold for my liking even with warm gear on lol

I bought some thermal tights yesterday, so you'll be glad to hear that summer will start tomorrow!

no matter how cold it is i always end up with damp clothes through sweating at the end of my journey but a decent hat, gloves and socks/boots are essential in very cold weather

Got caught out last weekend. Felt OK when moving with just a long sleeve shirt and bib and braces. Problem was I got an unfixable puncture. Split tyre wall.

After an hour of mucking around replacing two tubes and then trying to repair holes in the tubes I was absolutely freezing.

had to give up and get a lift back home. Took an age to warm up.

Many more layers yesterday but still very cold when stopped.

I had the right gloves with me today but on the way home thought I'd be fine with my normal cycling gloves. Thought I had got away with it until I realised my thumb had gone numb when I tried to unlock the gate :S

I want some glove liners quick. My fingers are freezing in my Pearl Izumi Cyclone's. A lot more than they did last year. Maybe it's all the weight I've lost and the low calorie diet (Change my butcher. If only ). Anyone recommend any at a reasonable price?

Specialist cycle gloves are a total waste of money, i picked up some nice warm Karrimor gloves from sportsdirect for £4, they do the job perfectly
most cycle gear is way over priced, i just wear normal clothes, tracksuit trousers, parka, hat,boots,dead cheap, no problems
