Any TV programmes (or films for that matter) you can think of where the intro music/credits were perhaps better than the show itself? This old American sitcom comes to mind for me

because it's so wonderfully evocative of a time and a place, and can easily stand alone. And how long were the credits!

Having said that, I got some laughs out of it this morning:

so perhaps I'm being unfair. I'd have to watch an entire episode or two, and try not to judge it against everything I've seen in my couch potato life since.

Perhaps it’s not surprising the song is so good (at least if you’re a sop for nostalgia), as according to Wikipedia it was written and recorded by former Lovin' Spoonful frontman John Sebastian, who looks like John Lennon’s long lost cousin in this picture.

Shaft... my god it's a terrible film and its sequels got even worse. Shaft in Africa! My lord what were they thinking.

The same could be said for Superfly and Trouble Man, and probably the entire 'blacksploitation' genre

All sequels to The Magnificent Seven, only made to sell the same soundtrack, again, and again, and again.

[edit] Probably every TV show with a theme tune by Laurie Johnson... any screen writer would be hard pressed to come up with something that justifies his music.
