I've had a few customers phone me up recently,asking if/when i'll be back at work. All very sympathetic about my hip breaks,offering advice and saying don't rush back blah blah. The sympathy ends when i tell them that i intend to get back on my bike ASAP. You're not serious....You're mad if you go back on that bike again....I'd give it up and join a walking club at your age:rolleyes: and other such advice and words of wisdom have been offered. They just do not understand!! I tell them it's my hobby(love of my life even)and i'd be lost without it,but it falls on deaf ears. The only ones who understand are fellow cyclists!:bicycle:

Try - It's a non-weight bearing exercise, helping with muscle strengthening & bone density improvement ... oh and it's fun:smile:
 
I understand their concern: a double (?) broken hip isn't something to treat lightly. Of course, you should get back in the saddle asap, but only if it's absolutely necessary.

This time of year, with leaves, frost, standing water, poor visibility and short hours of daylight, makes cycling, IMO, an unattractive proposition.

I'm recovering from a slipped disc and won't be getting on a bike here again until April at the earliest. I'm hoping to hire a bike when I go to India soon, but it's mostly to see how I get on. I don't fancy a relapse.

Just be careful. And sensible. You have no control what others do around you.

A few years ago i would've ignored that advice, but after what's happened to me i'll take it in! Those things you mentioned i once saw them as a challenge,but now i regard them as a serious danger. I've always gone for a ride on a Sunday,be it 60 odd miles with the local CTC or 15 miles around the block. Today i did 1 hour on my exercise bike watching the tv in the front room. It's a lot safer!

That's interesting and it fits in perfectly with the half-life of scientific fact*, which is only about 25 years, IIRC. Right now the science of nutrition is waking up to the (new) facts that eating doesn't make you fat and that carbs cause inflammation. The life of the low-cholesterol diet "fact" was about 40 years.

However, quite recently I watched a BBC program on Neanderthals and they were speculating that the noticeably thicker and heavier arm bone sets on one side of the fossil skeletons were due to laborious tasks such as working leather. They likened it to modern day cricket bowlers who have similar lobsided bone densities in their arms.

These things always take a decade or so to distill after first disproven.

* The half-life of Scientific fact is the title of a book that describes the phenomena of establishing fact and then discrediting it decades later because of new discovery.

I haven't been offered any physiotherapy. It looks like i've been left to do my own. It'll be 6 weeks on Wednesday since my last break. I'm tempted to go for a short ride but i fear coming off again. Realistically i think around mid January would be about right to get back on the bike. Providing the weather and road conditions are good that is.

Search for articles about the combination of Vitamins K2 and D3 in relation to bone and arterial health. (Basically D3 for getting calcium out of food and K2 for sticking it in bones and teeth where you want it, rather than arteries, where you don't!)

I'm going for a bone density test early January. They want to find out why my hip has broken twice. Probably because someone weighing 14 stone fell on me, and the 2nd time i fell from a 2 ft height flat onto concrete.

I got it all the time when I fell off horses and broke bones (pelvis, thigh, ankle, foot, wrist, elbow, collarbone (often), ribs, skull - not all at the same time). I still got back on and I have still been known to ride, from time to time. I haven't had bad injuries from bike offs but I suspect that people would say the same thing.

ask to see an NHS Physio assuming you aren't in a position to pay privately
