It was after 00:30hrs on Saturday morning I was driving home on the Suffolk Essex borders when in the opposite direction, out of the darkness, came a cyclist. 'Ummm, a bit unusual' I thought but then came another and another. Then a small group. Then a few more groups and eventually an even bigger group. And then more groups and in between the groups a few stragglers. Amongst their number I saw at least one tandem and recumberent and possibly a tricycle. With their bright LED lights it was quite a sight! I was't counting but if there were over 50 riders I wouldn't have been surprised.

But who were they? And why chose to ride in the dead of night?

Were they heading for a coastal town?

The Japanese cycled in numbers down the Malayan Peninsula and captured the Empire's greatest island impregnable fortress.

It's a Paris-Brest-Paris qualifier. That means most of these riders are planning to do a 400 and 600 to qualify for doing a 1200km ride. Yup, to some of them, it's easy.

I did a 300k last weekend. I arrived at the end with 1 minute to spare. They aren't easy for me.

no wonder your clavicle isnt fusing.

Yeah, but despite the lack of traffic on the roads and no police around to book them for travelling at night without lights, it still took the Jap cyclists two months to reach Singapore. Very poor show.

As others have pointed out, this was the Green and Yellow Fields 300km Audax. Because this is a PBP year, there was a strong turn out of over 120 people. A good tail wind meant we were awesome for the first 95 miles or so, but then we turned South and into the wind.
