We are insured but not to that level so the insurance company will not pay out the full amount.

AAhh well not being to be insured for what you have ,still its a bitch of a thing to happen.

Even if he is insured for the full cost it will take a good few month to get the money back.

So yes his season is over. It has happened to me a few times in the last 5 years and spent two years out of cycling except for commuting.
