Trust me, I’m a doctor.

I have at times said to a doctor that I am sorry that Ia m questioning them
but when I was at University my Hall was the one most first year medical students chose
so I knew quite a few of them

One doctor just looked at me and said "That explains a lot - I'm surprised you even come to me in that case"

medical students were a special kind of crazy!!

on the topic of "not inspiring confidence"

Many years - actually decades - ago I was in a very techy role in a big computer department

when we needed extra help it would always be seriously techy and deep in the operating system
because our job was to be able to fix anything techy and we were good at it

anyway - so we have a thing on the operating system (VMS for anyone who knows about it!) - which does not do what teh manual says
AND we have tried all the sneaky bits and pieces that we have learned over the years
things like a system parameter that is binary and starts at 1 - which means they don;t want users using the zero option
yes that techy

anyway - so we need to ring up Digital COmputer (the company) and see what is going on

sometimes you get someone who susses out quickly that you know what you are doing and passes you onto someone
and by then - by "someone" I mean someone who starts the conversation with
"Hi Mike haven't heard from you for a few weeks - how are you"

but sometimes you got the "Youth Opportunity Wordker" as we used to refer to them
who insisted on going through ALL the basics
and follow teh script

including, at one point, "you need to switch the computer off and on again"
which - with VMS - was NOT what you do - reboot maybe
but a reboot would have to be scheduled as there are 1000 users connected to it that have to be switched to teh backup in an orderly manner

and we knew that would not solve it
just leave a hole for it to fall into some time in the future (anyone from Windows listening???)

That type of "helper" was a right pain and it could take an hour to get past them at times

AND these days - as I left that job in 2001 - I get the same with places like Virgin and Sky
yes I HAVE tried powering it off and on
Well you need to do it again and wait 5 minutes before switching ot on again
One guy insisted on leaving it THIRTY MINUTES before switching on - and he stayed on teh phone the whole time!!!

doesn;t inspire any confidence in then at all

You’ve probably heard the one about Tech Support, then? About the chap who could not get his computer to start, and had to find a torch to see if it was plugged in?

I have been there
not actually needing a torch
but on speaker phone from a teacher and she said how it was nice and quiet in here because the machines were all quiet for once

Hmmmmmm

Waiting for the train this morning in sleepy suburban sarf east London when a funny looking train went through the station.

A pair of diesel locos pulling two smallish, rather squat, odd looking containers. Why would two wagons need such pulling power?

A quick search revealed that they were, or looked exactly like, nuclear waste containers. (Link below)

I'm sure they were perfectly harmless and nothing could possibly go wrong.

My brother talks about that going through Lancaster. I think it's a regular thing. Presumably something to do with Sellafield.

Sellafield I might be OK with but heading south through Catford at rush hour seemed odd. Maybe it was on its way to Dungeness to pick up some spent fuel and take it back oop North.

On the subject of nuclear waste, and inspiring confidence some years ago I watched Prof Martin Poliakoff(sp?) talking on YouTube. He was saying that as the waste can give off helium the containers have to be properly ventilated ... "otherwise they might explode, and that would be embarrassing"

"Embarrassing" is one word for an exploding container of nuclear waste, I suppose.

Yes - they have 2 locos so if one breaks down the other can take over without a break

they do not want nuclear stuff stuck on a railway line in the middle of nowhere for lot of reasons

also - apparently some of them are empty and some are not
and only people with special clearance know which is which
