Did the old glue have Trichloroethylene in it?

I don't know. The two liquid solvents that I used were carbon tetrachloride - Thawpit dry cleaning fluid was a good source and methyl ethyl ketone aka MEK. I still use MEK.

In junior school they had some glue that smelled of marzipan. If you like marzipan it was heaven.

A solvent for lots of things, get oil off like magic. Not good for the skin tho' and not a good idea to use it to put out fires. We used to have jars of it in the workshop.

I used to have an empty fire extinguisher that used to contain carbon tetrachloride. It looked like this...

Working in a garage the mechanics would use sawdust with the hand cleaner to absorb the dirty oil residue. It worked well and stopped some of the grime soaking into their hands.

A guy I worked with had deep cracks in his skin & apparently the fumes from a carbon tet extinguisher were really bad.

Blimey! I remember that one now you come to mention it. I think we used to stick cardboard and paper with it. Wasn't it gloopy and white? There was also that stuff in a glass jar with a rubber thingy on the top that might have been made from animal bones.

EDIT: It was LePage's gum made with mucilage, a plant extract, not animal
