My first roadbike was carbon, pretty petrifying on a long steep fast moving hill. It still scares me a bit as my daily rider has cross levers which I use all the time!
If you are so worried, fwiw I think you are right to return it. Cycling on roads is a lot about confidence which you need to develop but to do that you need to spend time on the roads
