We had a near miss once near Luton airport, coming back from hols. Flight had been delayed, so it was the wee hours (1am or so), on the M1, going south. Taxi driver kept looking back and chatting to us (me, Mrs F and our then baby, who is now 20yrs old). Has he seen the stationary traffic ahead at the roadworks, that he is speeding towards? Has he seen them? He's still chatting. We're getting closer. I shouted (screamed) LOOK OUT!!!!!!!! and at the very last moment, he veered into the hard shoulder and skidded to a stop. I was furious with him, and I think (if I remember rightly) he didn't charge us.

Half the problem with Russia by all accounts if you only need a brown envelope and a few dollars to get a licence to drive anything. That, the weather, no knowing the rules of the road (if there are any) and speed.

The standard of UK drivers is much higher than the vast majority of other countries. I cant think of many places I have been where I feel as safe.

The exception, maybe by luck more than skill was the blue Mitsubishi doing the slow speed J-turn to avoid the container at about 3.20
