Hi, I last week I brought a second hand turbo trainer. At the moment ive been using my road tyres (Michelin pro 4 endurance). Am looking to buy a cheap wheel to use on the turbo as I got some old spare tyres in the shed. My bike run on 105 11 speed group set, I like to know do I have to get a wheel with 11 speed capabilities and a 11 cassette or can I just get any 700c wheel and use any speed cassette. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

If you use a wheel with a cassette 9/10 speed you will without doubt run off the cassette at dome point and could cause a lot of damage to either your frame rear derailleur/chaln or all of them.. My advice would be to buy the cheapest 11 speed wheel but buy a matching cassette in both speed/quality. As a old cassette will wear both your chain/crank.. I picked up a spare wheel/turbo tyre and put a new matching cassette on it and now I enjoy my turbo as it takes 30 seconds to change my wheel and I'm off . hope i have helped.

@kiwifruit Not sure what the symptoms of "run off the cassette" would look like in practice or how damage could be caused to the RD or the frame - perhaps @peter_liver could explain/describe - "at dome point".
You have 11sp STIs, an 11sp chain and an 11sp RD. If you use a non 11sp sprocket cassette the gears will not index properly but no damage will accrue as you'll soon get pissed off and not use the turbo with that 'spare wheel'. You DO have to get a wheel with 11 speed freehub/cassette.
So @peter_liver 's subsequent advice is spot on, though, if you have the space I would prefer @Fab Foodie 's advice: get an old bike that fits you and can be made to work from the tip or wherever - down tube levers are fine and no brakes required. She'll be there for you to jump on whenever the urge takes you without playing around beforehand.

Fixed-wheel/singlespeed works well too, or 3 speed ... whatever. I use my old fixed wheel 50s Holdsworth with a dodgy fork.
