I'd like to get my old Thinkpad 540 running linux - I've been told it should make it run faster (and it is, by modern standards, painfully slow).
I got as far as installing a basic version (can't remember which, but it was recommended for machines like this), but booting up made the windows startup seem like lightning (it took getting on for 10 minutes). Worse still, I could not get the Belkin card installed for love nor money, so I couldn't get wi-fi, which kind of defeated the whole object. Has anyone ever tried/had any success with something like this?
I know many people will just think: why not ditch it and get yourself a proper computer? But I do like that old Thinkpad. It's super-small, bullet-proof, and has a lovely keypad, and if I could keep it - just running properly - I'd love to.
