"multiplication takes preference over addition" - what does that mean? (Maybe I'm still wrong.)
You do any multiplication before addition. And don't do the operations left to right. For example 2 + 3 × 10 = 32. It's 3 multiplied by 10 then add 2. It's not 2 plus 3 = 5 times 10 giving 50.

No.

5 + 2 × 10 = 5 + (2 × 10)
= 5 + 20
= 25

Which isn't the correct answer.

It's 25.

Multiplication first, then addition.

So 5 + (2x10) = 5 + 20 = 25.

That is the answer. Like my post and close the thread.
