I've never understood the 'pull' of Hebden Bridge. My only visits are for Chris Crossland's audaxes and gigs at the Trades Club.
I feel the same way about Leeds, except that I've never been to any gigs in Leeds or started any audax rides there!

I have been on a few Leeds-based forum rides, and it is handy to catch trains from to visit family in the Midlands, an area that otherwise would have no 'pull' either, but Leeds is like any other city - a place to be avoided whenever possible.

HB is okay as a town to live in, but I probably wouldn't visit the place unless it were at the mid-point of a bike ride. Actually, I wouldn't really go and visit any town or city - I'm not into tourism; I am more interested in the journey than the arrival.

NT and I will generally have a coffee or two out over the course of a weekend. Yeah, we could stay at home, but we like to sit and people-watch, have a change of scene.

At his, we go and frequent the guy with the little coffee van in the precinct. At mine, we go to one particular Nero, and try to bag window seats. If they are full, we sit nearby and watch like hawks for anyone getting up to go! A coffee and cake will often last us an hour, it's just a nice little treat.

My gripe with the new style coffee places is that you have to stand there waiting while they mess about banging things to make my order.
For three quid I really do not think it too much to ask them to come and take my order and make it while I sit down and relax.

I hate the banging. Why do they have to make such a racket? :elderly:

now come on, that's just outrageous - that stuff they put in the roll cant be mistaken for bacon surely? Mr paul, you live in Somerset - every where you go there is a pig farm - you must be hanging your head in shame

I don't really like coffee so you could serve me almost anything and I would be none the wiser.

coffee shops do seem to be the new pubs though - I blame Friends myself - especially Jennifer and her always cold boobs.

I thought the general consensus is that we're not allowed to like anything Greggs.

I love a good Greggs but it's so expensive these days. A chicken pastie and a cheese and onion pasty and a fudge doughnut was my treat of choice on giro day but there's no way I could afford it if I were still unemployed.

I love Hebden Bridge - best chippy EVER, although I fear it may now be a coffee shop, it's that long since I visited.
When (when... is not very often at all) I go into Costa I marvel that 3 bits of biscuit/cake 1 coffee and 2 hot chocolates (mrs V and Little-un have expensive tastes) can cost as much as a bar meal and drinks for all 3 of us at a wetherspoons pub.....
I refuse to buy cake in costa as I used to work in the shop belonging to the bakery that make it, and I could buy an entire cake (slight seconds if the icing wasn't perfect) for what they charge for a slice in their shops.

AJ's?

If so a colleague of mine bought it ran it made decent money from it and sold it just before it was flooded. By all accounts it is now closed down.

For the best chippy ever you need to go to Robin Hood's Bay. It's in a ginnel at the bottom of the hill.

As I have access to a lot of people's recycling, and I'm not afraid to pick up a bit of litter, I collect McD's free coffee stickers (One sticker on each cup, 6 stickers for a free cup), and Nero loyalty cards with odd single stamps on (one stamp per drink bought, 9 stamps for a free drink), whenever I find them.

I've had a couple of completely free coffees from each outlet on the strength of that!
