If you know the difference between the two, you should be showing others the way. do a bit of people watching next time you are in one of these zones and see how people react when some knob comes blasting through there weaving in and out of the crowds ;)

I suspect gavin doesn't mean the necessity to dismount for a pedestrian zone, but those blue signs they often bung up where a cycle lane crosses a road or somesuch, which are often utterly pointless, and I think, not an order but a suggestion. If a zone is peds only, then of course, one shouldn't cycle it, but these are not usually marked with 'cyclists dismount' signs, rather with proper red circle 'no cycling' order signs.
