I am on a hybrid with 35 mm tyres(marathon plus) and it gets dodgy in parts, definitely wouldn't recommend doing it on a road bike, as you would have to contend with mud/dirt tracks and also some pot holes to weave in and out of. Keeps things interesting though lol

Belligerent walkers ,some not even local,insisted on using the original route despite the fact that previously nobody used to use it at all. The stress got to them they now live somewhere else.

I am all for keeping paths etc open and have reported to the council when I have found a path blocked but a degree of common sense seems to get lost sometimes.

That's just pathetic. What possible justification is there for behaving like that?

I'm on a more road focused hybrid on 28mm gator skin hardshells so I don't mind those kind of roads so much, but if its muddy then I can get a lot of wheelspin

If its dry then I can at least do it and dodge around the big holes.

That said, if they make it nice and smooth it might make for a nice loop. Over gorse covert mound, down to silver road, over to the a57, back across the m6 and up through padgate...

Are you coming in from croft way or from oakwood m8? or the other way from hollins green?
I'm from oakwood and that was my main route before i took to going hte longer a57 route instead.
the farmers are friendly enough even if the 'road' surface is not. as you've probably seen its a collection of pot-holes and stones that make up a road and i hope you're cleaning your bike regularly!
i would recommend not taking the entirety of silver lane but rather taking the cut across the walking route onto rockingham close. gets you out of the pot holes much quicker even if there is a little muddy bit to negotiate it'll also mean you won't have to take that small section of the a574 with the lunatics that come off the motorway and think its a bloody rally course.
the only things on this road i would say is watch out for pheasants and hedge trimmers.
the pheasants spook and i've almost been offed by one, the hedges when trimmed leave the road full of small blackthorn caltrops that will defeat just about any armoured tyre going!

I did check out the rockingham close cut through a few weeks ago but it was that muddy and boggy that I would have needed wellies to navigate it, so I go the other slightly longer route, but unfortunately its full of pot holes and a poor state of repair.

What is the a57 like? . I work in irlam/cadishead, so would need to get across to the other side if i was to go this route.

haha, i will check that route out on my way home. I take it is in the corner (just before silver lane turns right). there is little cut through at the edge of a set of fencing?

yes, over kick start hill, then turn right to the stile and out on to Rockingham Close (turn left, obv.)

I work in irlam also, generally heading out of birchwood, i take the path by the boulivard which takes you over the m6. then join the road down for winwick grange, take the cycle path over the m6 junction and onto the a57 then right up into irlam/caddishead, straight up liverpool road. from my house in oakwood its 7.3 miles using this route. takes me about 30 mins and i generally don't have too many eedjits trying to flatten me we'll have to commute up together eh? on the off chance you don't work at a certain notorious ISP/Telco based in irlam do you? if so i prolly see you every day lol

ah cool, sounds like a plan bud. i know the isp that you are talking about, its at the end of the road which my company is on lol, how mad is that.
