I just got out of a 50hr week and now down to 40hrs...but I'm salaried so no loss of pay. I hated 50hrs...its not doing it, thats just accepting 10hr days is 'normal'...it was the lack of desire to do anything when I got home, a bit too tired to fire myself up..plus I live 21 miles away so it was an hours commute a day even by car.
if you pro rata it, is the 50hr rate any better or are you just working longer for the same hourly rate..
TBF the zero hours would concern me...

Plan C: You have the basics covered already. Any paid work is for extras only. Unless you really enjoy working for other people, retire from that life and do something else instead that you DO enjoy and if that brings in some spending money - great! For example, I know someone who made a few thousand pounds a year buying and selling things he liked on eBay.

option 1. Luxuries are a state of mind. As a kind of relevant example, I used to have Amazon prime and buy something pretty much every month. I asked myself if I really needed all that. Could have been a mid-30's crisis, but instead of buying stuff I started selling stuff on Ebay every week until I'd got a few hundred quid. Now I don't even go on Amazon unless I desperately need something. With young kids around, my rare luxury is free time, which costs nothing!

You can't buy "time" and when you go you'll wish you'd had more of it.
I am 53 and work on a zero hour contract, but I own everything (House, car etc) and I don't need to work full time so why would I do that? For more stuff? I might die next month. I have found that the contract, as long as everybody is reasonable, works very well for me, I am periodically approached with the offer of a contract but it seems to me that I have the best of both worlds. I always have enough hours (because it's in the public service and I cover sickness................) but if I want to book a cheap flight next Tuesday, I don't have to ask permission or put in a holiday request, I just book it & tell them that I am not available, same goes for sunny days too, those are for cycling.
But, prior I worked for myself so the insecurity of no guaranteed salary/hours is entirely normal for me, it doesn't worry me at all..It does worry some.

Whichever is going to give you the most pleasure. I enjoy what others may call work, I am not sure what to call doing something that gives me a buzz and pays well.
