I'm sure we can find ways of skirting the crowds!

Let us know how you get on.
I'm wondering if anti US sentiments are creeping though to the thick skulls and it has reduced US tourism. You can always hear the conglomerating around Notre Dam, the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, the Champs eh leez ay etc

Hmm...

Problems, problems. At best, air filter. At worst, cracked cylinder head. In between those extremes is a long list of potential problems.

White smoke is generally a sign of unburnt fuel.
It could be injector foul up. In which case add some Forte/Redex fuel system cleaner and take it for a decent run. Take the air cleaner housing off and have a good look at it. It might be damp or clogged.
Those are the easy basic things you can do. The black smoke (which I presume clears) is synonymous with valve stem oil seal deterioration and seals within the Turbo - often only revealing when it's been sat for a while.

Otherwise, the good news is that you have a Duratorq engine which are bomb proof. My trannie I sold with 142k on the clock sold locally and it's just hit the 185k mark. Plus, spares for the Duratorq engine are reasonably inexpensive. Finding a replacement Duratorq engine with low miles in good condition is nigh on impossible as they are well sought after.

Cracked cylinder head? You got some news about Santa Claus that you want to share with me too to make my day complete?
I did think about the Redex but it's got an engine management light on and I need someone professional to put my light out (& I need to know where I stand before the weekend......probably next to a tent.)
Thanks for sharing the full gamut of possibilities.

I'm sure if you offer Pinno a few cans of Irn Bru and a fiver he'll pop over with his bag of spanners and fix it for you.

I am sceptical about a cracked head. The white smoke would take time to go away. Unscrew the oil filler cap and see if there is excessive white 'toothpaste' on the underside of it. Is it drinking water/oil? Does it overheat?

Valve stem oil seals (blue smoke) are a common Fraud fault (they can be done with the head in situ on Frauds, don't let some back street mechanic give you bull).
White smoke is a generally a fuel issue.
Black smoke may also be an over choking issue. Blue smoke is burning oil - try and ascertain which is which. Is it blue smoke or black smoke? But burning oil is usually down to seals.
Try injector cleaner and run it.

My gut feeling:
A malfunctioning Ford Transit Duratorq EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve can cause several noticeable symptoms. These include a rough or uneven idle, reduced engine power and acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and the illumination of the Check Engine Light.

Getting to the end of the work shifting Mum. All the hard stuff done, house tidied up and handed over, most of the contents now sorted out. Just all the tedious admin stuff to do, changing addresses and other notifications to sort etc.

Been a bit mixed for winter for us. Almost no snow again this year on local mountain, but plenty of very cold mornings. Rummaged through the storage stuff to find the full fleece lined long bibs, need them now.

Not losing oil or water and there's no toothpaste: they were top of my checklist.
I did have the EGR on my bingo card which correlates with light usage.
Top of my bingo card however was: leave it with a garage who don't pick up the bl**dy phone.

Who said the microbiome is the 2nd brain? Your gut was indeed correct.
New EGR valve currently being priced up.

Afternoon
Or is evening. Now in the sunny Alsace after just scraping through Dutch customs as Mrs W tried to smuggle in some milk and cheese to avoid going to shops tonight and then bottled it when asked if she’d got any diary products. So once the grandson gets off the loo we can go get some food.
