The gear ratios will be important then rather than the absolute number
I don't think there's much in it weight wise so use your money for a better (lighter) frame and tyres (wheels also worth a consideration weight wise)

No problem I was looking at getting a Merida Ride 300 (2016) but they had sold out pretty much, it has Tiagra.
I got a Ride 400 with 105 I like it but the 105 wasn't the deciding factor they both had the same frames etc really nice bike I would really recommend it.
I've got Claris and Ultra Di2 and the difference is.........immense.
I have rode a bike on the surface of the Moon and around some of the roads on Britain and the difference is..........the same.
Nah! The Moon's dead boring to ride on........no atmosphere.

I had a tiagra for a few years and it was totally fine. When I got the new 105 I was shocked how much slicker the gear changes were and the extra sprocket makes me feel up to date with the cycling world. Not to mention I prefer nice little fine jumps in between gears. However as others have said a good frame is more important.

Last bike Tiagra....current bike new Ultegra....the difference...? One more sprocket and comfier hoods? They do the job pretty much the same IMO.

I've got Tiagra 4700, and my wife has 105, both on Giant road bikes. Both are very good and I can't really feel much of a difference when riding either bike.
(Although I do suffer from minor badge envy, but that's because I'm a little bit wanky like that).

I must be the same. My Mrs has a far better bike than I have, can't help casting an envious eye over it. Why do the ladies get all the good stuff?

I have the better bike if I'm honest, (a TCR vs her Defy) but hers was the top end of that range so it was better equipped.
She does cast envious glances at my carbon frame, so it's actually a two way thing.

If my wife wanted to cycle with me on a regular basis I would get her a nice light carbon frame, Di2 and a nice set of wheels with GP4000S II tyres.
I don't have Di2 or a nice set of wheels on any of my bikes but would do everything I could to get her out with me.
