Time to change my gear and chain set, Help!!

I have a Carrea Vanquish

It had a major service early last year and I had new chain set, cassette and cables. A year and a fair few thousand miles through a wet winter commute and she needs some new parts. I was looking at replacing the lot, rear cassette, front gear set and chain. BUT I am baffled by the options and what the variations are. I am confident that I can replace the parts, I am not confident I am going to but the right parts though.
I dont have a huge budget but I am also not stupid enough to think I can get all the parts I need for £80. If someone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

I have looked for the cassette and think I have the correct one, same for rear derailleur, but when I start looking at the front gear set on a 50/34 setting and chain, I am not sure what tech specs I need to look out for to get the right one. Which specs are desirable instead of essential?

Lots of questions I know, but I am very confused.

Can I ask why you want to replace so much? The answer might well be 'because I want to / can do' which is fine, but the answer is unlikely to be 'because I need to'

Take the rear derallieur off and give it a good clean, and perhaps replace the idlers if they look worn and I'm sure it will go on for many years.

Your crankset is an FSA Tempo Compact (50/34) I believe. If the rings are worn you can just replace them and keep the same cranks. If you do want to replace it, you need one compatible with a JIS square taper bottom bracket.

The rear derailleur is unlikely to need replacing, looks like you get a Sora rear mech. Most common wear is chain and rear cassette as I am sure you are aware (always replace these as a pair, unless you get an early chain brake which happens. After that the front crankset/chainring. Then the bottom bracket and so on... (the list is endless)

Personally, I would look out for a Shimano Sora or Tiagra groupset as a replacement. I started out with an FSA crankset and it started to jump/slip under pressure after a few thousand miles.

Doing this stuff on a budget is so difficult, I am in the same boat. I scour Wiggle, Fatbirds.com, chainreactioncycles day in day out for parts to keep my Giant afloat.

You will also need external BB for the above chainset if you have a square taper one already fitted ( under a tenner)

Hi all,
Thank you for that advice it is perfect. Rear derailleur does need a good clean, so essential parts only. I am experiencing exactly what you describe Rooster1. I had a good luck at all the parts and I know the chain is well worn now and needs replacing as does the rear cassette (some very worn and one or two broken teeth). I wanted to change the front Crankset as it seemed pointless putting a new chain and rear cassette on without replacing the front at the same time.
There were a few "would like to" parts I was going to change, but budget is restrictive.
