When I was 25 I trained for a while before cycling across Australia. One of my personal achievements was doing a sub 30 minute 10 miles. I recall it well. That was then.

Now I'm 54 and I am wondering if I can still do it? All being well I will have a bash tomorrow.

Any tips?

Incidentally I seem to be suffering from post exercise coughing.

Find a downhill course with a tailwind. That will turn back the clock a bit.
I rather thought time trials were always out and back?

Most are, but with the plethora of traffic lights these days, many courses don't always start / finish in the same place ........... try to find one with a 'gift' hill at the start

Yes you will most likely be able to get back to that level.

Tips, don't go off too hard, if you hit 90% MHR in the 1st minute, you went off too hard.

BTW, which event are you thinking of riding tomorrow? Is there one in Cheshire tomorrow? If you are just going to go and ride one yourself, unofficially, to maximise the chance of success, go ride J2/1 in Chelford, it is the fastest local course.

Thanks for tips. J2/1 is my planned course. If the Sunday market traffic's not too bad should be okay. Thinking of going very early. Will time with Endomondo so that will pick the fastest 10 mile segment.

You could always go down on Monday evening and ride the club 10  Entry on the line (only a few quid), official timing and friendly faces!

06:30 start. Nice day, calm and warm. Porridge and a glass of water. Tyres up to 110. Very gentle spin out to J2/1. Henbury clock striking 7 as I passed. Started to speed up towards the A34 lights: 3,2,1 GREEN and off I went. Carefully pacing myself I sped across the first roundabout without slowing, through Chelford. Had to slow briefly for the right-turning market queue but I was soon piling the speed back on. By now things were burning. Heart thumping, head down, legs pounding the pedals. Eyes on the road ahead for the best line. Why is the Booth Hall roundabout so bloody far? And then there it was. Move right, no traffic and round I go.

Wind the speed up again. Now things are really hurting. Struggling to keep the pace. No Chelford hold up this time. Roundabout clear. Can I keep going? I feel that I'm slowing. I must keep going. And then there are the lights and the end. Relief.

Slow down and a very gentle spin home to look at the data. And the result...

10 mile time 29mins 10 seconds. Hooray! Didn't expect to do it so convincingly on the first attempt. "Well chuffed".
