Tiny rides of 2023

Thanks for your feedback! I started contributing to the Tiny Rides thread because it's easy to be overwhelmed by the rarefied athleticism of a cycling forum where the competitive riders take it for granted that they'll be talking to others who knock out scary distances at speeds that mere mortals would baulk at. I've never been particularly speedy but sometimes do longer distances. So I thought, why not write up some everyday rides that won't discourage others from doing the same? Sometimes if you're feeling a bit bleghh, a modest bike ride is just the thing to perk you up.

So basically, if it's under 10 miles I stick it on here. Over 10 miles, in "Your ride today". If it's on a recumbent, which it usually is, I stick it in "Recumbent Rides" on the recumbent forum as well. Enjoy!

Tiny Recumbent Ride
Cider Run on Rans

I must admit I felt more like having a snooze this afternoon but it was mild and sunny and how many more days might we have like this before winter? I’d thought about a longer ride but I was feeling quite tired so I compromised on a trip to the shops with an extension to the other side of town. I thought a ride past the place where I used to work, on my old commuter route, might add some interest though I doubt if any of the old work force remain, and I certainly had no intention of paying a visit.

So off I went down to the town centre, called in at my usual supermarket, then down to the river. There is a riverside path which links to a lane by an overpass. Not surpringly, it was rather muddy and leafy but was rideable on the level.

I had to duck to avoid a fallen tree.

It slopes steeply where it climbs to the overpass. It was narrow and slippery, with a drop to one side.

If I’d been feeling more on the ball I’d have made more of an effort to ride up it but not today. I used to get up it on a conventional bike on the way to work.

Once it levelled I carried on riding then got out on to Rilshaw Lane to turn right.

There were Road Closed Ahead signs but as usual I thought I might get through on the bike. I came across some more further on but there were still no barriers. I thought I might get through to Clive Lane to complete the circuit but not much further on there was a barrier from hedge to hedge. No choice then but to turn back.

Back I went, mostly downhill until the lane rose over the bypass. Then left into Station Road to turn down a steep hill to cross the bypass and turn right. I turned up Weaver St. and managed the steep climb from the bottom better than expected considering the way I felt when I set out from home.

I remember the route to work being easier and quicker than the return in the morning after a night shift. There’s a considerably longer and steeper climb on the way home. So it was today, and I was glad to eventually reach the traffic lights at Swanlow Lane before turning left downhill so I could get up speed for my uphill turn off followed by a downhill dawdle through the lanes to my back gate.

I’ve often thought that if you have a bike set up to be able to get across this town and back, you’ll be able to ride it just about anywhere, and that applies to any sort of bike.

I was certainly glad to have the gear range of the Rans today, in my weary bleary state but certainly the lower range is a must for any of my bikes.

Distance 5.29 miles. Max 23.0 mph. Average 6.8 mph. According to Garmin. Slow today.
Ascent 290 ft. According to Bikehike
